Melbourne based alternative-pop songwriter Tiaryn is pleased to present her third EP, ‘Lilith’. Tiaryn’s four-track, self-produced EP is her most authentic and raw work yet. ‘Lilith’ is a dynamic collection of songs in which Tiaryn faces her own beliefs about herself, womanhood, freedom and authenticity. One of Tiaryn’s continuous alluring traits is the inability to pin down her sound into one genre. Though the songs have a variety of clear influences including soul, rock, hip hop and jazz, there is an elusive nature to Tiaryn’s overall sound, and the magnitude of evolution between each release is what makes her such an enticing artist to follow.
The Story of Lilith
During the period where Tiaryn was composing these songs a friend told her the alternative Adam and Eve story. To amend the issue of having two conflicting versions of Genesis in which Adam was either created at the same time as Eve or before, the high priests of the day wrote the story of Lilith. Adam and Lilith were created from the same earth but soon after there was a quarrell. In intimacy, Lilith demanded that Adam be on her, and she could be on him, but Adam refused. He asked ‘Why should I lie beneath you?’ Lilith replied ‘I was also made with dust, and therefore I am your equal.’ As Adam tried to force her to obey, Lilith, in anger, pronounced the name of God, and left. Throughout history, most religions have not encouraged equality between female and the male religious figures. This saw the accounts of Lilith being censored from the Bible as it gave ideas of empowerment to women.
Being raised in a Christian household and only hearing the story of Lilith in her mid 20s, Tiaryn was shocked to realise how embedded the oppression of women is in many cultures and how the trickle down effects of this have impacted her beliefs about herself and what she is capable of, or even “allowed” to achieve. “For a long time I've believed I'm not good with computers and that I need a producer to make a record happen. I didn't think I could do it myself, maybe because there have been so few female role models up until now. But after a lot of encouragement I decided to do it, and I'm so proud of what I think is the most 'me' thing I've ever made.”
Moving through anger, confusion, playful flirting, acceptance and hope, ‘Lilith’ has a subtle nostalgic feel with its tape hiss, bouncy drums and watery rhodes. While there is a timelessness to the songwriting, the EP also possesses a punchy, bold, conviction akin to Alabama Shakes and Noname. “I really didn’t want to labour over this EP, so I took the band into Headgap studio over two days and recorded the whole thing to tape. It was really refreshing and exciting to record in the old school way.”
If you’re a fan of soul music and are unafraid of where it’s heading, this evocative EP is for you.
